my local store is out of kagayaki rice, and all they have left in that category is tamanishiki. have any of you tried that brand? how does it compare to kagayaki?

Hello. I remember stalking this community a while back, and then kind of forgetting it and doing other things. But now my sister and I are trying to learn a new recipe every weekend so I can learn how to cook good stuff for myself before I go away to college. This weekend is going to be a Japanese weekend (I have decided). So far on the menu is miso soup, and... that's it.

I remember (back when I was stalking) I found a really tasty-looking recipe on here for dango, and I was wondering if anybody knew where it was? I've been searching through the archive for... well, for a while now and I didn't find it.

Also, if anyone could give me a good recipe for meat & veggie dumplings (anything but pork!), that would be great too!

Thank you!! :D

has anyone tried to make chahan/fried rice with ramen soup based paste?
the paste i have on hand is spicy pork paste.
is it feasible?
should i fry the paste first or add it to the rice at the final stage?

hope to hear from you, thanks!

Hi, hello, and yes I'm a guy but I love food so I'll ask anyway:

Anyone here knows a recipe for takoyaki? We have the stove-top grill used for takoyaki but  I don't really know how to make one. I wanted to surprise my girlfriend with it (I can't cook).

Thanks.  ^^

An acquintance of mine brought a load of Japanese basil/shiso seeds with her from Japan this summer. She grew the lot of them in her back garden, but now has had to dig them up because they won't survive our winters. I ended up with two of them (one green, one purple) and will be trying to grow them as potted plants in my apartment (you never know, right?). We'll be trying the same with a couple of them in my parents' greenhouse.
Anyway, so now I have two plants which may or may not last through the winter, so at the very least I will have to do something with them before then. I know you can use it as seasoning or even fry whole leaves as tempura, but I was wondering if you guys have any tips on particularly tasty uses of/recipes for this herb,

EDIT: I just got a tip from my Japanese teacher and thought I'd share: take a chicken filet and slice it thinly. Sprinkle with salt, pepper and white wine and leave for a few minutes. Wrap each slice in a shiso leave (greener side on the outside). Fry them in a frying pan just long enough to make sure the chicken is done (we don't want salmonella poisoning).

It was my birthday yesterday, so I decided to make Okonomiyaki.

It didn't taste quite as I expected, even though I used all the 'real' ingredients (save for Nagaimo or Yamaimo...I used Tapioca Flour) -- I even had dancing fish flakes!! I think maybe I just need to goo to Japan and try it there, and not make it at 8 at night when I'm tired and not really in a cooking mood :P

Okonomiyaki PhotosCollapse )

I had real Okonomi sauce, too, but I much preferred the Tonkatsu Sauce...but that might just be because I love Tonkatsu & Mayo... =>.<=

hi,

i'm from singapore and my country is on the super humid side.
do you think its possible to do bentos in a humid country? will food go bad?
or are there recommended recipes that wont go bad for humid countries?

are there other attributes as to why bento boxes wont go bad in japan besides weather conditions? i'm aware japan gets really humid in the summers. (no microwave ovens allowed - i.e on a picnic or pack food for later on a hike)

i'm really noobish on this. kindly advise, thank you!

Hi everyone!

Well, I came back from Japan over a month ago, but I've been really busy. However, I took the time today to upload some pictures I took of Japanese food. They're all here: http://picasaweb.google.com/102549454520878943072/JapaneseFood#
With a short description for each.

Hope you enjoy them!
